Welcome to 3B!!

Dear Family,                                                                                  August 14, 2014

Welcome to third grade! My name is Marnett Meier, and I will be your child’s third grade teacher.  I am excited to see familiar families on my class list. I love having younger brothers and sisters of former students. I look forward to meeting new families, too. We have twenty-three students in our room this year.  I am excited to announce we will have a student teacher in our room, Juanita Benedict. She will be in our room for 16 weeks. This will be a wonderful opportunity for her as well as for the students. Together, we will be able to better meet the needs of all of our students.
We will be utilizing a six-day rotating schedule for specials, which is actually a three-day repeating schedule. Please keep the copy of the class schedule handy to keep track of PE days (2 & 5) for tennis shoes. Your child may bring a water bottle to school, especially during the hotter months.
Each day we will have a literacy block. The students will be responsible to read, complete word work, write, and meet with me. We will be focused on responsibility, independence, and growth in reading skills. The reading groups that meet with me are very flexible and change depending on the students’ needs and ability levels. Loris DeGroff is a community volunteers who comes in twice a week to listen to the students read.
There will be homework nearly every night corresponding to the daily math lesson. It is an expectation that homework be completed and brought back the very next day. Practicing flashcards and knowing the basic math facts is very important. The better your child masters his/her facts, the easier math will be. We will be using quite a bit of multiplication and division this year. I will also have support from Judy Kinneer, a community volunteer, during math four times a week. She typically has a small group for enrichment and also assists students as needed.
Ms. Vitosh will teach science and I will teach social studies to all third graders. We have scheduled field trips with Pam Holz and we also have special days dedicated to units of study. We would appreciate parent volunteers and will send home more information as the days arise.
My expectations are fairly simple: quality work and respect at all times. The students and I will discuss both of these topics at length and determine consequences and boundaries for the classroom atmosphere. We will create the classroom expectations together. They will also be setting goals-behavior and/or academic.
I believe all students need to advance at every level. I accept children as they are and work to develop and enrich their abilities and skills. Teamwork is extremely important and we need to work together for your child to succeed. I am available before, during, and after school if you would like to schedule a meeting to discuss your child’s progress or needs.  I also check my email regularly: mmeier@mphawks.org. I am typically at school by 7:30 and leave around 4:30: 319-646-2984. My cell number is 319-325-4908, you can call or text me. Please do not hesitate to contact me.

I look forward to our partnership and teaching your child.
