Flat Stanleys!!

Dear Family,

Flat Stanley will be mailed Monday. Please warn your friend or family member he will be arriving shortly. Typically, people send him back with pictures and a story about what he did in their community. They often tell about the weather, local interests, landforms, celebrations/events, adventures he went on while he was there, etc. Some send back brochures or items that show how their community is special. Stanley has even come back with extra clothes. Tell them to just have fun with him. They are due back Nov. 8th so we can share them on Grandparent’s Day. There are some details and directions in the letters the students wrote, but I wanted to let you know as well in case questions arose.

Monday we go to Foster Woods from 9 to 11. You are welcome to join us. We will leave around 8:45AM. Please dress your child for the weather and have them wear pants and tennis shoes.

Next Wednesday is an early out. We will do tye-dye T-shirts on Thursday.

All autobiographies should be completed, please check with your child to see if they still need to finish theirs. I believe there are 7 that are not finished.

Most of our reading groups have been focusing on fluency and comprehension. Now that the students can decode, they need to focus on their rate of speed. They should sound fluent and smooth when they read, not like a robot. Some of our group books are  little easier so they don’t have to focus on decoding and can practice increasing their rate. Others already read fluently and with good expression, so we are focusing on comprehension. It is important  they understand what they have read.

Thank you for supporting your child with their at home reading as well as math homework. The homework helps to reinforce the skills taught in class.

Have a great weekend! Go Hawks and Mid-Prairie!!

Friday News

Dear Family,

What a great class! This has been a terrific week. I am enjoying your child very much.
I sent home a book order Friday. You can order online or by writing a check and bringing back the order form. They are due Aug. 31st. The book orders are completely optional.
We have been very busy this week! In math, we took a very long pretest and a unit 1 pretest. The purpose of a pretest is so the student can demonstrate their knowledge and growth. If a student demonstrates they already know the content, he/she will then be enriched and challenged. If he/she does not understand, then I will provide extra support and re-teaching if necessary.
The students also took a spelling test by writing sentences I dictated. It showed me about their spelling skill as well as writing samples. I have created spelling groups, but they are quite flexible. Your child may be moved around depending on the level of words and needs of your child. The groups are ability based. There is a grade level group, grade level plus a few enriched words, and an above grade level. This last group will have vocabulary words and extensions of the phonics skills of the other groups. If the words are ever too hard and stressful, please let me know and I can adjust them. Also, if you would like your child to try harder words, I can always move them up, too.
Many students do not know their address or phone numbers. Please try to help your child memorize these important life details. They will also be included on spelling lists.
We began writing an autobiography today. We are writing them as a chapter book. You might be able to give your child extra details so he/she can add to their writing next week.
Your child has been exercising throughout the day. We are encouraging oxygen to travel to the brain and keep us all awake, alert, and ready to learn. Many students are also getting hungry throughout the morning and day. If you would like to send a healthy snack with your child, he/she may snack on it during the day. This also helps the brain learn.
Thank you so much for signing your child’s planners. They are doing a wonderful job of reading at night. Becoming a better reader takes practice, just like a sport or musical instrument. Thank you for your support with their education. Be on the lookout for math homework next week.
If you ever have a concern, question, or comment, please do not hesitate to ask me.
Have a great weekend!! I have a trailride from Parnell to Millersburg on Saturday- I can’t wait to see my friends and have fun. I hope all of yoiu get a chance to enjoy the great weekend, too.

First Day!

I am testing out my email group. If you did not receive an email on Tuesday, please let me know so I can fix my group names.

We had a fantastic first day! Your children are wonderful.

There is a piece of paper to fill out for a class promise. You will need to sign the bottom. A couple students filled it out at school. They also wrote a goal in their planner for the minutes they wanted to read and left a space for what their actual time will be. If they took one of my books home, they wrote it in their planner as well. I would like them to write what book they are reading at home so I can try to keep track of them finishing books and not just trading them in for new ones after a few pages.

I look forward to tomorrow. They are a great group!
